Thus, our families are an ingrained part of our prayers always, especially the females who are responsible for keeping the family bonds intact.

Varalakshmi Vrat is one such occasion when the females of a family worship Goddess Lakshmi for the health, wealth and prosperity of their families and spouse.

It is an important pooja performed by many women in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana,Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

Story Behind Varalakshmi Vrat

Somewhere in Bihar, when it was known as the prosperous town of Magadha, there lived a very pious female from a devotee family named Charumathi. It is believed that Goddess Lakshmi was impressed by her immense devotion. Thus, she appeared in Charumathi’s dream and advised her to worship Goddess Varalakshmi for the boons of the wishes she had for her family.

When Charumathi divulged her dream, her husband and family were very supportive inspiring her to perform the puja. She was joined in by the other females of the society and the ritual has progressed from then on.

Why is it Celebrated?

The name ‘Varalakshmi’ literally stands for ‘Vara’ meaning boon and ‘Lakshmi’, the Goddess of wealth. Thus, Goddess Varalakshmi blesses her devotees on this auspicious day with all worldly pleasures.
