The words ‘Saraswati Avahan’ is a two- letter word, where Saraswati is Goddess Saraswati and avahan stands for invoking. Thus, Goddess Saraswati, the Goddess of all knowledge and wisdom, consort to Lord Ganesh is invoked on this auspicious day. There is no success in life possible without knowledge and wisdom. Goddess Saraswati is invoked and worshipped in the last three days of the Navrati. The first day of invoking Goddess Saraswati is called Saraswati Avahan.


Story Behind Saraswati Avahan


Goddess Saraswati is found in almost every major ancient and medieval Indian literature between 1000 BC to 1500 AD. She is one amongst the trilogy of the devi’s of Saraswati, Lakshmi and Parvati. As per Hindu Vedic scriptures, they undertake the task of assisting Lord Brahma, Shiva and Vishnu in the creation and maintenance of this universe. Goddess Saraswati is also known by the names of Sharada, Mahavidya Nila Saraswati, Vidyadayini, Sharadamba, Veenapani and Pustak Dharini.




The last three days of Navratri are dedicated to Goddess Saraswati. It is celebrated on the seventh day of the waxing moon in the Hindu month of Ashwin on Mahasaptami. The Mul Nakshatra Avahan Muhurat begins at 3:37 pm to 5:55 pm on 7th October, 2016.




Success is the sum of all small efforts repeated day in and day out. But a divine touch of luck can make things much easier and sweeter for an individual. Goddess Saraswati is the lord of knowledge and wisdom, the two most important ingredients required for the recipe of success. Devotees may seek her divine blessings to seek knowledge and wisdom and climb the ladder of success by overcoming all the hurdles of their life.


Products to perform the puja


As per Hindu Vedic scriptures, the rituals and time of Saraswati Avahan are well pre-defined. Saraswati Avahan should be performed during the ‘Mul Nakshatra’, the actual puja should be performed during ‘Purva Ashadha Nakshatra’, the Balidan puja is done during ‘Uttara Ashadha Nakshatra’ and the Visarjan of Goddess Saraswati should be performed during ‘Shravana Nakshatra’.


The rituals for Saraswati Avahan should include:


  • Saraswati Avahan should be done as per the proper muhurat and the complete puja of Goddess Saraswati spanning some 4-5 hours should be done.
  • Goddess Saraswati should be praised to seek blessings.
  • Goddess Saraswati’s feet are washed followed by the ‘sankalpam’.
  • Goddess Saraswati is worshipped with Kumkum, chandan, incense sticks and flowers.
  • Naivedyam or savoury sweets , specifically white in colour are offered to the Goddess.
  • Devotees may also fast on this auspicious day.
