The origin story of panchmukhi hanuman began in the battlefield of the war between Rama and Ravana, a time came when ravana seeked help of the king of the underworld ahiravan. On the request of demon lord, ahiravan took the disguise of vibhishan and from under the protection of hanuman he took both ram and laxman in underworld and captured them, on realizing this hanuman came to the underworld and went into the battle with ahiravan.
Even after every attempt ahiravan did not died, finally hanuman learned that his life is in the five lamps placed in different directions and all of them must be blown at once, to accomplish this task, hanuman took form of panchmukhi and blew all the lamps at once and killed the demon and rescued rama and laxman.
