Gauri Pujan literally means Worshipping Goddess Gauri. Ganesh Chaturthi is the most celebrated festival for the Maharashtrians. Goddess Parvati is also worshipped with all pomp and show, a very prominent festival in Maharashtra.


It is also known as ‘Mangla Gauri’ .It is the only time of the year when women enjoy with their friends.


Gangaur is one of the most colourful and important festival for people of Rajasthan. The word ‘Gangaur’ is made up of two words, ‘Gana’ and ‘Gaur’ , where ‘Gana’ literally stands for Lord Shiva and ‘Gaur’ pertains to Goddess Gauri.



Story Behind Celebrating Gauri Pujan and Gangaur


The popular belief is that Goddess Gauri visits and resides in homes during this auspicious period. Therefore the houses are kept clean and new decorations are added to welcome the Goddess. The Gauri Puja is held on the third day during the 10 day Ganesh Chaturthi Puja. Goddess Gauri who comes in search of Lord Ganesh is believed to bring in auspiciousness and prosperity.


It is believed that after a temporary long seperation Goddess Gauri and Lord Shiva reunited on this day of the Gangaur festival. Thus, they are worshipped together by married women for longevity of their husbands.


Why is it Celebrated


Gauri Pujan is the only festival for women where the men are not involved, rather is celebrated amongst women friends. Most of the Maharastrians bring Gauri idol exclusively during Gauri Pujan day during Ganesh Chaturthi.


The small dolls of wood are made and worshipped like the real Idols of the Lord Shiva and Goddess Gauri during the festival of Gangnaur. The women chant hymns or Gangaur Geet to the Goddess .




The muhurat for Gauri Pujan 2016 is from 4:26 pm on 9th September to 6:52pm on 10th September. The pujan mahurat is from 06:28am to 06:42pm on 10th September, 2016.


The muhurat for Gangaur 2016 is from 9:22pm on 9th April to 5:55pm on 10th April.




Gauri idol is bought inside the house one day before the pujan. This idol is then decorated with fine clothing saree and bridal jewellery like bindi, bangles, etc. Goddess Gauri is also symbolized to bring in prosperity. The females get together, wear traditional clothes and play the whole night. Gauri Visarjan takes place the next day with full pomp and show.


Gangaur begins from holi and continues for 18 days with females praying for their spouse. Women sing Gangaur geet and the festival ends with the arrival of Lord Shiva to accompany Goddess Gauri.


Products to perform the puja


Gauri Puja includes Kalash Sthapna, Panchang Sthapna, Sankalp, Ganesh Pujan, Navagraha pujan and Gauri Pujan, Aarti.


During Gangaur, newly married females fast from holi for a span of 18 days. They sing hymns in praise for the Goddess and do the Puja.
