Story behind Ganesh Chaturthi

The story revolves around Goddess Parvati who created a living being out of the dirt of her body, Ganesh. She gave him the responsibility of guarding her when she went for a bath.

On arriving home after many days, Lord Shiva wished to enter his room, but was stopped by Lord Ganesh. Angered by the altercation, Lord Shiva cuts off the head of Lord Ganesh. He immediately sent his personnel in all directions looking for the head.

The head could not be found, but the head of a recently dead baby elephant was available. So Lord Shiva attached this head of elephant to the body of Lord Ganesha. Lord Ganesha was blessed with immense powers and the boon to symbolise best beginnings.
