Bhadrapada Purnima

 Bhadrapada Purnima

Bhadrapada is the month to worship Lord Ganesh. But, Lord Satyanarayan and Goddess Ambaji are worshipped on this auspicious day. Chandra Grahan is also to take place on 16th September which is not of any significance to the Hindus as the eclipse shall not be visible to the naked eye. Sankranti are auspicious days according to the Hindu Calendar as the Sun changes its ‘rashi’. There are 12 Sankranti in a year. The Kanya Sankranti is also celebrated as Vishwakarma Puja, birthday of the architect God.

In Gujarat, Bhadrapada Purnima is a very important festival and celebrated with a lot of pomp and show. The day holds a special significance pertaining to Goddess Ambaji and her temple. Farmers from all over the state attend the fair organised to worship the Goddess at the Ambaji Temple. It is one of the fifty one Shaktipeeths and is believed to have been built on the place where the heart of Goddess Sati fell when her body was dismembered.

According to Hindu methodology, Lord Vishwakarma was the architect of the whole world according to the directions of Lord Brahma, the lord of all creation.

According to Matsya Purana, when amrit or the divine nectar surfaced during Samundar Manthan, Lord Vishnu disguised as Mohini, cheated and gave amrit only to the Gods. Rahu, a demon understood and sat between sun and moon. On knowing the truth, Lord Sun and Moon told it to Lord Vishnu who cut him in half to destroy him. Thus, to take revenge Rahu and Ketu tend to hold sun and Moon in their mouth known as Grahan.
